We have once again enjoyed an exceptional year; 2016/17 has seen significant changes and exciting opportunities created and I am proud that we have been able to continue to present audiences with an entertaining, diverse and high calibre programme of productions across two of the city’s much-loved and prominent entertainment venues.

At the end of the last financial year, the Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust took over the running of Newcastle City Hall.  The teams at both venues have worked tirelessly and with enthusiasm to come together and we are all relishing the prospects for the future as we look to build on the collective strengths of each.  We have committed to a substantial improvements programme at the City Hall and early stage work is now underway.

I am delighted with the news that yet again the huge efforts and commitment of each and every member of our hardworking team has been recognised as Newcastle Theatre Royal was named Most Welcoming Theatre in the North East for the second successive year.  Voted for by our audiences, this prestigious accolade is testament to the high standards of service displayed throughout this wonderful venue.

Audiences have certainly been spoilt for choice over the last twelve months as we welcomed the very best in touring drama, musicals, opera, dance and comedy to the stage, including a spectacular 8 week run of Mary Poppins and yet another show-stopping pantomime.  At the City Hall, audiences have enjoyed performances covering a broad range of musical genres and comedy – from break-through talent to legends such as Billy Connelly - as well as shows from a new generation of performer that have made their name and built a following through social media.

As well as offering my heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the Theatre and City Hall, Philip Bernays and my colleagues on the Board of Trustees, I would like to extend my gratitude for the continued support from our Friends, sponsors and donors whose generous contributions have helped to ensure that this wonderful institution remains at the forefront for providing quality arts and culture in the region.
